Pinterest vs Real Life – Week 1: Halloween

on September 22nd, 2011 by Kalen | 11 Comments »

Quick intro for those who don’t know: Pinterest is an online bulletin board that allows users to share their ideas about decorating, food, crafting, or whatever else inspires them.

The great thing about my Pinterest is that I can let my alter ego flag fly freely and live in an alternative universe for a little while. In that universe I like to cook, crafts are easy and come naturally to me, and I dress boho-chic with an eclectic twist.

In the real universe I hate to cook, crafts are time-consuming and end up looking silly, and I dress in my husband’s t-shirts and my cousin’s basketball shorts I stole at a cookout he had this summer.

Proof. (The cheerleader pose comes at no extra charge.)

So I have decided to start a new segment on this website called Pinterest vs Real Life. Basically I will show you some of the things I’m currently pinning slash pretending like I’m actually doing vs. some of the things in my real life that dramatically differ from what inspires me.

Feel free to laugh. It’s pretty hilarious.

This week I am featuring my:

Pinterest Halloween vs. Real Life Halloween

These aren’t all the Halloween decorations I plan on putting up (I’m going to really do some of the crafts I’ve pinned on Pinterest). But I think the sampling will give you a good idea of what’s going down. All my decorations are from last year – pretty sure I went on a “shopping spree” to the Dollar store.

Pinterest Halloween:

Real Halloween:

Halloween “stake” that says Trick or Treat stuck in an empty planter? Sure!

Pinterest Halloween:

Real Halloween:

Random tiny pirate skeleton hanging from flag hook? Okay!

Pinterest Halloween:

Real Halloween:

Styrofoam “graveyard” sign accompanied by no graves? Why not?!

Pinterest Halloween:

Real Halloween:

Why use a beautiful wreath when instead you can use another styrofoam sign? PS) Isn’t this super appropriate for a mental health professional’s door?

Pinterest Halloween:

Real Halloween:

Why have a gorgeous fireplace mantle when you can decorate your stove top with a glittery haunted house and a Frankenstein candle? It almost completely recreates the drama seen in the pic above! Take a sub-par picture with your digital camera to really enhance the lighting & mood.

——————————————————————————-

There ya go, folks. It may shape up a little bit in the coming weeks, but let’s be honest with ourselves… my real life is pretty drastically different than the life I’d love to be a part of on Pinterest. Next week will be a charm too… I’m going to do Pinterest Wardrobe vs. Real Life Wardrobe. Be prepared to see a pair of Pink Floyd pajama pants featured frequently.

You are hilarious! So I have avoided the pinning frenzy, somehow, despite numerous people telling me I would love it. And yes, kudos for even decorating for Halloween. We put up some pumpkins (last year we didn’t even carve them) and I have a fabric wreath on the door. Those pins are obviously created by people who have entirely too much free time, overflow of money and no job or kiddos ;)
